Mexican silver libertad began to be minted in 1983, a year after the release of Mexican gold libertad. In 1984 or 1985 silver libertad was not released, but already in 1986, the minting of 1 ounce coins was resumed. At the same time, the collection of silver libertad expanded by four fractional weights of 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 and 1/20 ounces in 1992 and added coins weighing 2 and 5 ounces in 1996. Design development
- Obverse: The sign of Winged Freedom is depicted in the center of the coin. This symbol is known since the time of the Mexican revolution in the 1820s. Today the statue of Winged Liberty stands on top of the Angel of Independence column in the center of Mexico City, where it was elevated in 1921 to commemorate 100 years of independence from Spanish rule. This image began to be used in the 2000s. All design options depict the Winged Freedom against the background of the famous Mexican volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaxiuatl.
- Reverse: In the center of the coin there is the national emblem of Mexico, on which an eagle standing on a branch of a cactus holds a snake in its beak. This emblem reflects the struggle of the Mexican people against the colonial rule of Spain. It is surrounded by 10 emblems that have been used for the last 180 years. This version of the reverse is used only on coins weighing 1 Onza or more. Smaller coins contain only the main emblem of Mexico on the reverse.
Did you know? The legend says that the leader Tenoch stopped his people, receiving a sign from the Heaven. He noticed an eagle devouring a snake entangled in a cactus. The cactus with its prickles symbolizes the burden of earthly life, the snake symbolizes the forces of evil, and the eagle is a symbol of strength and courage. It was the eagle, the fig-tree and the snake, which the Aztec leader saw, and formed the basis for the creation of the Mexican national emblem in the XXth century. This particular emblem is the official in Mexico. The reverse of gold and silver libertad is decorated with it.

The mint in Mexico City (La Casa de Moneda de México) was founded in 1535 by the Spanish governor Antonio de Mendoza. His goal was to create the first Mint in North and South America. - Designers of the Mexican coin libertad was inspired by the gold coin centenario, on which the goddess Nick is engraved on the background of two volcanoes. Thus, the Winged Freedom − Angel of Independence column − appeared on the gold and silver libertad. It stands on the Angel of Independence column between the Popocatepetl and Istaxiuatl volcanoes.
- The Angel of Independence Column was arranged in honor of the 100 years of the victory anniversary of in 1810. Its height is 36 meters and it is located on a hill, in each of its corners there are four figures symbolizing peace, war, justice and law. On the column is a sculpture of the goddess Nike, who holds broken chains in her left hand, symbolizing freedom, and in the other habd she holds a wreath of laurels, which is a symbol of victory.
- Unlike most of the world’s gold and silver coins, the libertad has no denomination (on coins only weight in troy ounces is indicated). The price of libertad can change daily, along with global fluctuations in the price of gold and silver. All coins are put into circulation as legal means of payment with varying value, which is annually announced by the Central Bank of Mexico. In addition, libertad can be exchanged for paper pesos in some banks in Mexico, and for this you do not have to own a bank account.
