The Silver Maple Leaf series are bullion coins issued annually since 1988 by the Royal Mint of Canada. The coin is legal tender on the territory of the country; its standard value is 5 Canadian dollars, and weight – 1 troy ounce (about 31 grams). Special features of Silver Maple Leaf
The profile of Queen Elizabeth II is usually depicted on the obverse of the Silver Maple Leaf. The Canadian national symbol – the maple leaf is engraved on the reverse. The portraits of the Queen changed with time, depending on the year of minting:
- Issues of the period 1988-1989: the portrait of Queen by Arnold Machin is on the obverse of the coin.

Silver coins of the Maple Leaf series are considered worthy of the most exquisite collection; moreover, the cost of most copies allows the beginner numismatist to purchase them. The price of standard coins of relatively new series ranges from 19 to 300 Canadian dollars. More rare copies are more expensive – from 800 to 3,000 dollars.
Interesting facts
- Experienced numismatists have noticed that some silver “maple leaves” coins have a blemish that is hardly visible to the naked eye – a milky white speck on the reverse. It is believed that it is connected with some particular qualities of processing silver at the mint.
- Initially silver “maple leaves” were packed in Mylar, this way it was more convenient to sell copies by piece. However, since 2009, due to the constantly growing demand, coins began to be packed in semi-transparent tubes with a yellow lid, which bear the logo of the mint of Canada. Some special editions are packed in tubes with an orange, red, blue or gray cover. Each tube can contain 25 coins.
